Parenting is Serious Business. As a single parent of five children and foster parent to more than a dozen children, Shirlee Smith has worked hard to give them all what they needed - not a friend, but a mother with real love and principles to last a lifetime. There's nothing theoretical or ambiguous about her parenting.

Everything is important including the music her kids listen to, the clothes they ache for and the friends they keep. Now she shares what she has learned in a highly readable, very down-to-earth book marked not just by practical wisdom, but by wit, warmth, challenge and encouragement.

Thank you so much for pointing out something that should be more obvious: parents have changed, but not kids. I am very frustrated with parents who seem to have turned over rule of the house to their children.
As a middle school teacher, I see the effects of children who have parents who want to be friends, rather than parents. You made some wonderful points and I wish more parents were like you!

After reading your column, "More awareness is needed in foster care", I believe you owe teachers an apology. You wrote "who is responsible for the education of Jamal and his foster brother Eric? Is it the schools even though everyone knows they don't deliver?" That was a low blow Shirlee....
It was mean-spirited of you to tell us that we do not deliver. Rather than blame us for the problem, why not work with us to create a solution?

I happened across your column recently. I used to read it in the 1970's. Good to see you're still out there, fighting the good fight for parents to take hold and raise their kids.
I have a 28 YO boy and he's doing well thanx to good ideas like you wrote of and of course, my Yankee farmboy views on child raising...

Thank you so much for your parenting columns. Your common sense attitude toward our children should be adopted by all our educators and administrators. As a parent with 2 children in public school--I try very hard to help and volunteer where I can to make our public school great for all kids.
Again, many thanks for your courage to write what so many of us feel needs to be heard.
