Using
common sense instilled with sass that characterizes everything
she does, Shirlee Smith's cable television talk show started
small in Pasadena, California in 1994.
The technology may have been public access, but Shirlee's
approach was confident, creative and controversial in
a "Hey, you should have seen Shirlee's show last
night" way. Most importantly, her message rang loud
and true with parents, the people with whom she was trying
to connect.
And connect Shirlee did:
With science fiction writer Octavia Butler, a guest on
"Inspiring Creativity," who talked about the
influence of her mother reading to her in early childhood.
Shirlee Smith with Elyssa Nelson,
Director of Childcare at Caltech/JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory)
Child Educational Center in Pasadena, California.

Former school Superintendent
Ramon Cortinez on Talk About Parenting with Shirlee Smith
With California Senator Jack Scott, who, in "Parenting
Philosophy," said, "We want to hear a child's
perspective, but it's not an equal vote."
With Lorraine, a parent in the audience, who said about
voting, in the program called "VOTE!," "I
have two kids and we never talk to them about voting.
Voting is a bother. I just don't want to vote and I
don't vote."
Guests, audience members and Shirlee Smith interact
on Talk About Parenting, and include a mix of professionals,
parents and kids. A Reading Segment encourages literacy
in young people. A Where to Go segment showcases free
or low-cost family outings.
