Talk About Parenting with Shirlee Smith, Inc. launched with the popular television show, initially seen only in Pasadena, later, in 2005, They're Your Kids Not Your Friends made its debut, as did numerous well-received parenting workshops that are presented nationwide.

The organization was founded in 1997 and has received grants from the City of Pasadena, Wilt Chamberlain Foundation, Los Angeles County Supervisor, Michael D. Antonovich, Philanthropist, Adelaide Hixon, City of Pasadena Northwest Programs and individual contributors.

Reginald K. Brown, Esq.
Reginald K. Brown is a Los Angeles attorney specializing in entertainment and business litigation, representing his clients in a wide range of matters. After attending Compton public schools, Mr. Brown graduated from Stanford University, earning his bachelor's degree in Political Science. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School. Among his many outside activities, he co-founded the Stanford Black Alumni Association as well as Friends of the Children's Institute. He has been baseball coach for both the Cheviot Hills Little League and the Ladera Little League.

Elliot M. Gold
Elliot M. Gold is President of TeleSpan Publishing Corp. which he founded in 1981. He has been a consultant to scores of providers of teleconferencing equipment and services worldwide as well as noted speaker, publisher, panel moderator and author of numerous books and articles, conferences, workshops, and tutorial reports on the subject of teleconferencing and videoconferencing. He is publisher of the newsletter TeleSpan, joint author of six books on teleconferencing, and author of sociological and other publications. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Michigan State University and his M.A. in Sociology at California State University Los Angeles. He has been an active supporter of the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts of America. He is married to Shirley and the father of two sons.

Gerry Lewis
Gerry Lewis was an active member/volunteer for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Assoc. starting in 1980, just the second African-American woman member at that time. She served on numerous committees for the Tournament during her 26-year tenure, and received the "Women at Work" Excellence Award for her dedicated service. She also has made time to volunteer in many other areas, including the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Pasadena's Accessibility and Disability Commission, the Pasadena Auditorium Activities, the N.A.A.C.P. Altadena Branch Freedom Fund Luncheon Committee and the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Committee. In 2009, after 20 years of service, she retired from the Pasadena Unifed School District Prior to that, she was a a management support specialist for Pasadena Neighborhood Housing Services Inc., a professional cosmetologist, an event planner and a wedding coordinator.


Ivan Light, Ph.D., Director Emeritus
Ivan Light specializes in urban sociology with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, and immigration. He is the author of numerous textbooks. He is a member of the American Association and the International Sociological Association. He frequently lectures abroad, and is a retired professor from UCLA. Married and the father of two college students, Light says, "Parents must read to their children at least a half an hour everyday!"

Emma P. Oshagan
Emma P. Oshagan is a clinical psychologist with an extensive background in the psychiatric and mental health areas, most recently with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, where she serves on many committees. She is currently Director of Armenian Program Development at Pacific Clinics in Pasadena. She was a college psychology professor and a professor of journalism and communication before arriving in Los Angeles County. She received her M.A. in Psychology/Child Development from American University of Beirut and her Ph.D. in Communication in Wisconsin. She earned both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology. She is involved with numerous mental health education programs and projects involving Armenian and non-Armenian groups and is founder and president of Armenian American Mental Health Association.

Phoenix Smith
Phoenix Smith is a sign language interpreter. She is employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District at Marlton School for the Deaf. She received her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from UC Irvine and attended UAS, becoming a nationally certified sign language interpreter and a member of Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (R.I.D.). She is also a member and former secretary of Hear Zero (Deaf Advocacy Council), National Alliance of Black Interpreters (NAOBI), and GLAD (Greater Los Angeles Council of the Deaf), She has been a volunteer for the Exceptional Children's Foundation, Jeffrey Foundation, Altadena Library, Remedial Reading and Learning Center, Marlton School for the Deaf, and Talk About Parenting with Shirlee Smith. Her hobbies include reading, skating, and bicycling.
